Figures from NHS Digital reveal there were 2,958,199 prescriptions for sildenafil in 2016, compared to 1,042,431 in 2006.
The Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) place the sharp rise down to growing awareness, the drug getting more economical and less stigma being attached to buying it, with more men feeling “comfortable enough to stop by their doctor”.
But they also warned about the hazards of buying Viagra off-prescription online, as data revealed #17m value of unlicensed and counterfeit Viagra was seized annually.
Doctors have noted a trend of younger guys buying the drug on the internet to improve sexual performance or to offset the use of additional recreational drugs they’ve taken which make it harder to get an erection.
Prof Helen Stokes-Lampard, chair of the RCGP, said it was not a very good idea to buy sildenafil citrate, the generic name for Viagra, off-prescription online. She explained it was a “powerful drug that could have potentially unpleasant side-effects, and severe interactions with other drugs”.
She explained: “Purchasing medication online may seem convenient, and it could be attractive to patients that are ashamed to discuss medical problems with their doctor in individual, but it isn’t without danger. Firstly, there is no way for someone to know what they are purchasing is what they think that it can be, and this in itself may have profound impacts.
“There are a range of health reasons why the drug wouldn’t be prescribed — for instance, if a patient has a heart or liver problem, or if they have low blood pressure.”
(MHRA) said over #17m value of unlicensed and counterfeit Viagra was seized this past year, down from #20.9m in 2015-16 but well upon the 2014-15 figure of almost #7m.

He added: “The other way that it comes in is by somebody based They get big parcels from providers from the far east or China which becomes their inventory that they then distribute out in the article … we will grab big parcels heading on their way to drop shoppers and attempt to figure out where the shipper is to arrest them.”
London Doctors Clinic, a private chain of GP surgeries, said he’d heard anecdotally about young men purchasing Viagra online. “We see several guys who take [Viagra] recreationally and we may get a sideways issue like, ‘my mates are using it — is there any harm?’ You do not get people coming in and asking for it directly, most get advice from friends and order it online.” He added: “It is the exact same thing as steroid use in gyms, they’re usually somewhat worried about taking it and wish to check it’s OK.”
